"Mugshots is one of the most beautiful books I've ever seen. Line up all of the self-help books written by phony, falsely smiling gurus and you won't get a fraction of the inspiration that's packed into the pages of this brilliant collection of stories."
– Soho Journal
About the book: Over two hundred pages filled with striking black and white photography and dramatic real-life stories from some of Hollywood’s most successful artists who describe, with extraordinary honesty, their journeys from ruin to redemption. A beautifully designed book and cleverly conceived work of photojournalism, Mugshots is at once a work of art and an inspiration. The dramatic black and white photographs are of faces, many of them recognizable: hip hop artist Coolio, actor Danny Trejo, writer Jerry Stahl, actor Eric Roberts, writer Antwone Fisher, actor John Wesley, Hollywood producer Manny Jimenez, BMX superstar Rick Thorne, hip-hop artist Ms. Toi, actor Emilio Rivera, tattoo artist Mr. Cartoon, actor Seymour Cassel and activist Gilbert Salinas. The book contains thirty-eight portraits in all.
About the author: Jason Porath’s background in theater and journalism led him to explore the art of non-fiction visual storytelling as an author, film director and editor. He worked for several years in New York and London as a development writer and researcher for documentary films, and has directed a variety of identity films for corporate and non-profit clients. He is the co-author of Reckless Road: Guns N’ Roses and the Making of Appetite for Destruction, and his client list includes The Discovery Channel, The Learning Channel, National Geographic Television, BBC, Ford, Volunteers of America and the Special Olympics.
About the photographer: Jonas Mohr solidified his reputation as one of Hollywood’s best photographers while working for over a decade for European magazines. His creative and energy filled shoots have made him a photographer of choice for many of his well-known subjects. At the same time, Jonas’ interest in the offbeat and often-seamy side of Hollywood led him to cover a variety of subjects in documentary style. His coverage of the reclusive, body-piercing subculture known as “modern primitives” garnered international attention and acclaim. Jonas’ work has appeared in countless publications including GQ, Vanity Fair, Elle, and Playboy and in advertisements for products such as Vespa, Disney, BMG, MTV and VH1.
